Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

This journal, dealing as it does with the "Chariots of War," no less than with the "Wheels of Industry," continues to be of national importance. Its interests embrace impartially the transport wagon and the parcelcar, the military tractor and the steam lorry.

Freight Space and U.S.A. Imported Lorries.

Arising from the Government's declared intention to render available as much freight space as possible by the restriction of the import of wood pulp, timber, raw to

bacco, and other specialities, an effort is being made in certain quarters to induce the Government to restrict the importation of commercial vehicles from America, largely on account of their bulk. It is anticipated, however, that the Government will take no hasty steps in this direction because of the all-important necessity of maintaining increased transport facilities within these Islands at the present time. For very well-known reasons we are not at the present time able to supply sufficient machines, of certain types for immediate home employment.

Owenized Timber.

We learn from Joseph Owen and Sons, Ltd., the well-known timber concern of Liverpool, of a new method of drying timber, which, we are informed, obviates the stocking of supplies for prolonged periods in order to bring it to that state in which it is suitable for working.

The method is known as the " Owenized " system, and the plant which is used, it is stated, can be operated by unskilled labour. The timber is placed in large cylinders and is subjected, according to its character, to consecutive treatment by steam and vacuum action. We are not afforded definite particulars, but it appears that gaseous products are also employed in connection with this method of treatment. Public authorities are stated to have formed a favourable impression of this work, which is declared to be of national importance. The Royal at Manchester.

Following a paragraph which we published last week in regard to the 1916 Royal Show which will be held at. Manchester, it may be well now to record that the actual dates of this fixture, the 77th annual one, will be from Tuesday, 27th June, to Saturday, 1st July. The location will be at Alexandra Park.

A Paper oa "Chisels."

An interesting paper, with, the somewhat homely title "Chisels," by Mr. Henry Fowler, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Midland Railway, and at present one of the principal officials of the Ministry of Munitions organization, will be read before the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, in the building of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Great George Street, Westminster, on Friday, the I8th February, at 6 p.m. We have seen an abstract of what Mr. Fowler will say, and his investigations into a subject which perhaps many of us took too much for granted should be welcome to everyone who has anything to do with workshop practice in its many branches.

Automatic Starring.

We are now able to refer further to the subject of the automatic starring of men in "reserved occupations," on which subject the Editor recently spoke at Blackburn. The Military Service Act (No. 2) provides that single men who do not attest before the 1st prox. will be compelled, instead of their being automatically starred, to make application before their local tribunals after their " automatic " enlistment has become effective, for certificates of exemption. We gather that a duly attested man, who is ordinarily and regularly employed in any "reserved occupation," need not respond to the proclaniation calling up his Group or Class Unless he receive a direct letter of call, he can continue to follow his "re

served occupation "—such as motor or lorry driving, or as a " lorryman or drayman." If the local recruiting officer (not the sergeant) questions his so continuing, then his employers must defend the man's case, personally or by letter, if need be also at the local Tribunal, before which the officer is entitled to raise a claim for any single or attested man's services, if he thinks that such man is wrongfully holding back. Each man can also make his own personal claim.
