Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

E If you buy a part from a dealership, fit it in your own workshop, and it fails through no fault of your own, can you make a claim against the manufacturer?

"We provide a one-year warranty, and two years on major units such as engines and gearboxes," says Ken Morris, parts product marketing manager at Volvo Trucks (GB).

Can you claim back the cost of the labour of refitting it? "We'll refit it at a Volvo dealership freeof-charge," Morris replies.

Sc,ania offers a 12-month warranty on everything. "We'll pay the labour if a part fails, and it doesn't have to be refitted at one of our dealerships," says Dave Hickman, aftersales development manager at Scania (GB).

If a part proves defective, an operator misses a delivery slot and Is financially penalised by his client, he may try to claim any loss he has suffered off the manufacturer. It is worth a try but you can bet he will have a fight on his hands, and it will be the lawyers that profit.
