European Commission has reacted positively to a call to combine smart-card tacho technology with lorry road user charging kit and other telematics equipment.
Last week. the Flit met with Heinz Hilbrecht of the EC's transport committee and asked the Commission to urgently push forward a wide-reaching, integrated and forwardthinking strategy on information technology systems in goods vehicles.
The meeting was based on Hookham's work on seeking "expressions of interest" in a system which would combine all these digital functions in a single "black box". "This would help avoid a costly and unnecessary proliferation of different systems which vehicle operators will have to buy," says Hookham.
He has invited all interested parties--including tacho and telematics manufacturers, and the European Parliament, Commission and Council—to a meeting on 22 May to discuss the proposal.
