II A director of a multi-million pound storage and distribution firm has been sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to conspiring to steal property worth over £100,000.
Leigh !Jitney, who was based at Leggett Freightways' Enfield depot, appeared before Recorder Martin Oldham at Luton Crown Court.
Robert Woodland, store owner for Hoddesdon-based Raw Trading, received a nine-month prison sentence after also pleading guilty to the same offence.
The court heard how over a three-year period, Linney would meet Woodland in pub carparks and sell him items from the loads he was delivering on behalf of retailers such as !Mons, Playtex and stationers 3M UK.
Woodland, a salvage dealer who bought goods from many different sources, would then sell the items in his store.
A search warrant was executed by Hertfordshire police at Raw Trading's premises in February this year.
Following the swoop, further warrants were Issued at locations in Nazeing and Hoddesdon. Police eventually recovered 35 pallets of property. The value of bras that were recovered alone was £20,000. Most of the stolen property was later returned to Its owners.
For Linney, Simon Berkson said he had been dismissed from the multinational company for gross misconduct following his guilty plea. He had brought shame on the company and his family as a result.
Recorder Oldham acknowledged both the men's guilty pleas and recognised they were equally of exceptional character. However, the offence was so serious he had no alternative but to impose custodial sentences. He said Leggett Freightways had suffered greatly as a result of Linney's actions.
