Freight Transport Association chief executive Richard Turner has slammed London's congestion charge fleet scheme, insisting it is still flawed.
Speaking at the Centre for Transport Policy's Congestion charging in the capita/conference, Turner said that the fleet scheme had already cast rrA members 3,975 hours of administrative
time. It had become a 'pay and check' scheme rather than the 'pay and forget' scheme which was initially promised. He said: "Operators continue to have problems registering for the scheme and with vehicles being missed off the fleet scheme, as well as other problems.
"Today we've also heard from the Garda group [which is managing the scheme's administration] but it completely failed to mention the fleet scheme or to acknowledge the problems.
"Derek Turner [Tilt director of street management] said that congestion charging is not a money-making scheme, so why are they still charging commercial vehicles which have no choice but to come into the capital? There is clearly no traffic management reason for trucks to be charged," he added.
