Barry Travis
Barry Travis is the editor of the heavy commercial edition of the CAP Red Book. He comments on the Scania 124: "It was not as well received as we thought it might have been. As a tractor with the standard sleeper cab, it is a good-looking truck and it looks even better with the Topline cab."
"The 420hp engine delivers just enough power to cope with 44 tonnes and makes It a great truck to drive, but the overhead bunk on the front bulkhead, combined with the wraparound controls and high engine cowl, can make even this big-cabbed version seem a bit claustrophobic.
"Some of the big companies are holding onto their trucks for a bit longer than they used to do but there are still a fair number of younger Scanias out there in the used market The 4x2 units with the standard sleeper cab make a nice conversion into 6x2 rigid chassis. The prices are holding up quite well; an early 1998 4x2 is fetching a CAP average of £15,000. A 6x2 will set you back an additional £2,500, and expect to pay at least £1,000 more for the Topline cab," says Travis.
