STAFFORDSHIRE police have won a national award for tackling truck crime following a 62% reduction in incidents at the Nightowl truckstop in Cannock.
The service area on the M54 has been plagued by theft, antisocial behaviour and drive-off crimes:167 offences were recorded between April 2001 and March 2002.
But following a joint initiative between Nightowl and the Chase Crime Reduction Unit, including the introduction of CCTV with a targeted automatic number plate recognition system, the number of crimes recorded between January and December 2003 fell to 64. Sergeant Andy Smith from Chase Crime Reduction Unit says: We are extremely pleased to receive this award.
"It recognises the hard work of not only the police, but a host of other agencies that have provided support to this very successful project."
