Austrian Army Model in Britain

A N all-wheel-drive vehicle of unusual

characteristics is now in the hands of Ryders Auto Services, of 215 Knowsley Road. Liverpool. 20, who are British concessionnaires for the Puch organization. Titled the Steyr-Puch Haflinger, it is a cross-country unit which is employed by the Austrian army. Although a demonstration model has reached this country it is not known when supplies will be available.

The power unit is a 643 c.c. flat twin with four-speed synchromesh gearbox. Intended specially for cross-country work, including agriculture and forestry, this model has a 12-in. ground clearance, is able to ford water up to 20 in. deep, and is capable of dealing with extremely severe gradients either on the road or off. The chassis has a single tube backbone and all wheels have independent suspension. It is reported to have operated satisfactorily with a side tilt of 45 degrees.

Normal equipment includes an open platform of pressed steel with seats for driver and passenger, but the vehicle can be supplied with additional collapsible seats if required. Power take-off can be incorporated.

Why Reliant Are Not Showing

A NOTABLE absentee from the ra. exhibitors at this year's Commercial Motor Show will be the Reliant Engineering Co. (Tamworth), Ltd., makers of Reliant threeand four-wheeled vans. A statement issued by the company explains that this is because rising demands in Israel have made it impossible to proceed with production of the Regent Four four-wheeled van in Great Britain, despite recent extensions to the Reliant factory.

Thus, the company felt that it was advisable to withdraw from the Show this year, although three-wheeled 5-cwt. vans and trucks will be seen at the Cycle and Motorcycle Show which opens at Earls Court on November 12. It is stated that recent enlargements to the factory have doubled the available capacity and this will make further developments in connection with the Regent Four possible.

TRANSISTORIZED VOLTAGE . CONTROL

WHAT they claim to be a completely transistorized system of control on an A.C. generator set has been introduced by Simms Motor Units. Ltd., and is being incorporated in new London Transport A.E.C. Routetnasters. The Simms system uses electronic semi-conductors, both to rectify the A.C. supply and to control the output. A printed circuit is also used to save space.

Apart from the cutting down in the size of the controls there is also, say Simms, a complete elimination of the periodic adjustment demanded by electromechanical forms of control.

HYDRAULIC PUMP ON MARSHALS A MODIFICATION which A.E.C. has

now carried out to the Marshal chassis enables a hydraulic pump to be mounted and driven from the front of the crankshaft so as to supply power for hydraulically driven mixers.

Contracts for 12 Marshal chassis have been placed by Ransome and Rapier. Ltd., who ordered two Marshals earlier this year to conduct experiments. Winget. I.td., has also ordered 10 chassis.
