ANYONE can have a vehicle tested at a Government testing station, for the present. Speaking last week at a Press conference held in the Ministry of Transport vehicle testing station at Hendon, Middx, Lord Chesham, Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry, said that while the tests were being conducted on a voluntary basis they were available to any vehicle, irrespective of age. Vehicle testing became law on Monday. At first it will only apply to goods vehicles under 30 cwt. unladen weight and which were registered 10 years or more ago.

"The tests will become compulsory in a few months," he remarked. But until then, anyone could use the facilities for checking brakes, lights and steering of their vehicles.

How does an operator have a vehicle without an excise licence tested? " The • answer is that arrangements already made will enable an unlicensed vehicle to be driven on the roads for the specific purpose of submission for a test, and similar exceptions will be made for the use of an untested vehicle in these circumstances," Lord Chesham stated.
