CHANGES IN EXPIRATION OF EXCISE LICENCES

FROM October 1, excise licences will be available to expire in any month of the year instead of being issued for the calendar year or for quarterly periods, as at present. The new licences will be for periods of either four or 12 months. The excise licences which expire on September 30 can be renewed from tomorrow, but only for vehicles licensed for private use. For the next quarter only, commercial vehicles continue as before.

There will be no change in the cost of one of the new 12-monthly licences. The new quarterly ones will cost onethird of the full licence cost, plus a 10 per cent. surcharge for administrative expenses (similar to that charged for the present quarterly licences). The actual price of four-monthly licences will be rounded to the nearest shilling.

Fourteen days will still be allowed on either side of the expiry date for renewal of excise licences. Arrangements for issuing them are also unchanged. The reason for the changes, foreshadowed in the Budget, is to ease the peak demands for renewals.
