PAA ROAD test of the first MercedesBenz LP 327 13-ton-gross fourwheeler to be brought into Great Britain was carried out by The Commercial Motor last week. Because of space limitations the full report cannot be published until after the Show, but brief results are given in the accompanying table. These show a particularly good overall performance.
In respect of detail finish and general handling the Mercedes-Benz is outstanding, the cab in particular being far better equipped and finished than the standard cabs normally fitted by British makers.
The model tested had a maximum speed of nearly 50 m.p.h. and, because of its two-speed axle, gave sparkling acceleration and hill-climbing performances. Braking was supplemented by the provision of an exhaust brake as standard. Although, because of import duty, the price of the LP 327 is slightly higher than that quoted for comparable British chassis, its specification is far more complete and its general performance above average. The standard power unit develops 110 b.h.p. (net) at 3,000 r.p.m., and 232 lb.-ft. torque at 1,600 r.p.m.
