MAN and Knorr-Bremse link up to offer blind spot device

BRAKING SYSTEM manufacturer Knorr-Bremse has teamed up with truckmaker MAN to create a Blind Spot Assistant, which extends a driver's vision when making a turn at urban intersections and reduces the risk of accidents.

The device activates image and sound signals for the driver when the lorry is about to move and a cyclist or pedestrian enters its 'danger zone'.

Ultrasound sensors mounted on the vehicle's bumper and near side produce an image of the surrounding area, or danger zone. This information is merged with data from the engine, vehicle sensors and indicator lights to detect a potential road accident.

Blind Spot Assistant was displayed at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover but will become available as an option on MAN HGVs from late 2009 to early 2010.
