Chichester operates a sole MAN 6x4 tipper with a grab. The company started by Mick Shrub has been operating for 20 years and specialises in soil reclamation, muckaway work and aggregate deliveries within 30 miles of its base on the South Coast.

Manager Ashley Leake says:"We bought the MAN six-wheeler just 12 months ago in preference to a Daf. It's a relatively uncomplicated vehicle and we have become less enchanted with the sophisticated electronics of our 8x4s. We operate in muck and water, which is just about the worst environment for vehicle electronics. We would rather have reliability than operational information displayed on the dash.

-MAN multi-wheelers have a good reputation in this business. The six-wheeler's size makes it ideal for residential work. We have an HMF grab, which limits the load capacity, but with an 11m3 alloy body we can carry a payload of 13.3 tonnes. Over the year the truck has covered almost 40,000 miles. Early on it returned 6.5mpg, which was about the same as other trucks we had tried out, hut as the engine has freed up fuel consumption has improved to 8.63mpg. We are pleased with that, bearing in mind that the PTO is running a lot of the time.

-The truck has not been completely trouble-free the internals of the air compressor broke up after we had only had it a few weeks. It was the last thing the dealer checked out so the truck was off the road for three days while we waited for the correct part to be fitted. Drayton Garage at Portsmouth.which services the truck, is quite helpful:it will deliver our second MAN six-wheeler, which is due to arrive next month and will be an addition to the fleet. We normally expect to replace our trucks after about four years.

"The MAN is quite strong on site. The engine has plenty of power and is quite torquey

We operate in

but the driver says that the gearing's a bit toe high in the lower gears for soft ground.

"We specified a 150-litre fuel tank and tha is too small as we have to top it up most days. The next one will have a 200-litre tank to carry us over to a second day.

-The front tyres have just been replaced but the rears still have plenty of wear left in them. We expect the clutch to last the full four years with us.'The cab is small and there is little space to stow equipment: the driver keeps his chains in tht. passenger footwell be a bit more depth would give some space behind the seats for wet weather gear "The rubber floor has developed a soft patch under the driver's boots and we will have to see hoi it continues to wear. For now it makes the cab easy to wash out and the pendant pedals mean there are no holes in the floor to jam up with muck. The radio is out of reach in the centre of the header rail -it should be locate' above the driver. There must be a design faul with the lowest step mounting as we have ha to replace it several times."
