SUFFOLK FARMER Karl Rout (CM 9 October) is to be applauded for his plan to build a secure truck park near Felixstowe. We need more people like him, with vision and conrunitment, to invest in similar schemes nationwide.

What an excellent opportunity for beleaguered farmers throughout the country — I'll wager they can make more money per acre out of a truckstop than they ever could through agriculture, and this sort of secure facility is desperately needed.

My only question is how did he manage to get the scheme past the planners? In the South-East it has become impossible to obtain permission for change of use of agricultural land unless you want to build a thousand houses. Yet another example of the government's blinkered view of our industry and its contribution to the economy.
