THE DRIVER Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is scrapping the HGV provisional licence fee in a bid to combat the driver shortage.
Under the new licence fee structure,being introduced next March, truck drivers will also be excused paying for licence upgrades after passing their tests, or to renew or exchange HGV licences.
To offset these savings the DVLA will increase the cost of replacing lost or damaged licences and vehicle registration certificates. A DVLA spokeswoman says:"It is hoped that the new driving licence fees will help to reduce the burden on those individuals entering or continuing their career in the haulage industry."
Geoff Dossetter. the Freight Transport Association's head of external affairs, says the total cost of becoming a truck driver is far higher than anyone would like, and the FTA welcomes the move.
