THE CASE AGAINST a Spanish truck driver accused of smuggling £2.5m worth of cocaine into the UK has collapsed.

Last Thursday (9 October) Portsmouth Crown Court cleared Jean-Paul Georges Abad of attempting to smuggle 34kg of cocaine into the UK.

He was arrested last April after the drugs were discovered in his load of onions at Portsmouth Ferry Port on a ferry from Caen.

Customs & Excise spokesman Bob Gaiger says that the case collapsed for legal reasons, not through any failings by Customs or the prosecution:"While this is a disappointing outcome, Customs did prevent 34kg of cocaine from reaching the streets in Britain."
