• Hauliers in North Yorkshire could have to make long detours if a 10-tonne restriction is imposed on a bridge in Malham. The county council, which says the bridge is seriously weak, does not have the funds this year to strengthen it. It is considering an alternative route, involving a 1 2-mile round trip, but admits "it is scarcely negotiable to heavy vehicles" in winter. "We appreciate this diversion would pose real problems for farmers and hauliers in the area," says a council spokesman. Another option is to carry out limited repairs, giving the bridge a limit of about 17 tonnes.
