• The Guild of Transport Managers, in producing its own plans at the request of the Ministry of Transport, is almost certain to support the idea of registration or licensing for managers and will certainly not go along with those who think the TML unnecessary. This was made clear by the NGTM chairman, Mr "Geordie" Elvin, on Wednesday when he spoke at the annual meeting of No 3 area of the Guild at Ilford.

Mr Elvin said the views expressed by Mr Hugh Featherstone, director of the FTA (CM last week) were typical of the anti-TML attitude. If Mr Featherstone's cry of "confidence trick" was intended to lower the standing of any eventual form of

licensing, he said, it was a brave effort that many of the employers might applaud. But the majority of practical transport managers wanted a system which would improve their professional status and give them the power and authority which the Transport Act demanded, said Mr Elvin. There was no trick about it, but it would give them confidence.

Concluded Mr Elvin: "Of course the Act has turned the world of transport upside down. as Mr Featherstone says, and it has resulted in the transport manager coming nearer the top of the barrel. We as a Guild are not prepared to let the FTA (or any other body) push us back to the bottom.
