Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Northern Licensing Authority

reserved his decision last week when Mr. W. Tyson, Ratten Row, Caldbeck, Cumberland, applied to transfer two contract-A licence vehicles to an open A licence. Mr. W. McKeag, for the applicant, said that his client wished to find extra work by carrying fodder and agricultural goods for local farmers. Vehicles were idle for part of the year because of a drop in loads of barytes ore from Caldbeck mines to Widnes.

Mr. W. Tyson, junior, who was managing the business during the illness of his father, explained that when he was away on journeys he would inquire for hay and straw for his customers, and if it were available he would bring it back for them. He insisted that he was not a dealer and that the loads were the property of his customers.

The Authority was unconvinced on this point and there was some argument as to the type of licence suitable for the traffic. Mr. F. L McHugh, for the railways and British Road Services, who objected, submitted that fodder haulage was B-licence work.

CONCESSION FOR TIPPERS

THE Eireann Minister for Industry and Commerce has allowed a margin of 10 cwt. to be included in the unladen weights of tippers. Over threequarters of licensed carriers in Eire are restricted to the use of vehicles weighing up to 2f tons, and this limit did not allow sufficient margin for the inclusion of tipping gear.

Following representations by the Road Transport Association, tipping vehicles weighing up to 3f tons are to be permitted.

MOTORWAY LINE FIXED THE line of the southern part of the

London-Yorkshire motorway has been announced in the London Gazette by the Minister of Transport. It follows the draft line published in 1955, except for minor modifications near Tingrith, Beds, and Whitton and Kilsby, Northants

A draft Order making proposals for alterations to side roads and private means for access, which will be affected by the construction of the motorway, will be published within the next two or three months.
