Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANUMBER of appliances made surprise appearances at Earls Court when the Mechanical Handling Exhibition opened there last week. Competition among manufacturers is keen, and design advances are frequent. The Exhibition closes tomorrow night.

Priced at £562, the B250 is a new tractor built by the International Harvester Co. of Great Britain, Ltd., 259 City Road, ' London, E.C.1. • It may be used on the public road and a hydraulic pump for the actuation of various attachments can be supplied. A, differential lock is standard.

Incorporating a Perkins 1.6-litre engine, the 30P is the latest tractor made by the Mercury Truck and Tractor Co., Ltd., The Quay, Gloucester. It has a drawbar pull of 3,000 lb. and its turning circle is of 14 ft. diameter: It is 7 ft. 1 in. long and 3 ft. 9 in. wide.

Weighing less than 7 tons 5 cwt., the Jumbo 2-ton mobile crane introduced by F. Taylor and Sons (Manchester), Ltd., 142 Bolton Road, Salford, 6, can run on the highway at up to 20 m.p.h. Based on a Thames Trader chassis, the jib slews through 220 degrees and is articulated.

The company al so make a four-wheel-drive crane of 4 tons capacity, and a normal-drive 3-ton siewing grab crane which can pick up 2 ft. below ground level.

The new 6-ton version of the Iron Fairy mobile crane, a product of the British Hoist and Crane Co., Ltd., Compton, Newbury, Berks, is of ingenious design. The jib is anchored at the rear of the vehicle. which is powered by a NewageB.M.C. six-cylindered engine, and at the front are two hydraulic rams mounted on each side but meeting at a point on the jib.

Extension and retraction of the rams cause the jib to hoist and lower, but if the rams are moved dissimilarly, the jib slews up to 20 degrees on either side.

The Matbro 45 is a derated version of the.Maibro 60 fork truck designed for outdoor use by Messrs. • Mathew Bros., Sandy Lane North, Wallington, Surrey. Its capacity is 4,500 lb. at 2 ft. load centre. The turning circle is of 16 ft. diameter, and the steering is power assisted.

Duralumin masts are featured by the RH.22 1-ton fork truck built by Wingrove and Rogers, Ltd., Acornfield Road, Kirkby Industrial Estate, Liverpool, and which weighs only 3,800 lb. It is a four-wheeled appliance but with a special type of drive which allows an 85-degree steering lock.

The 20V 2,000-lb. fork truck is the latest -product of Lever: start. Ltd.. 185 High Street, London, S.W.17, As with other designs of this make, there are no hydraulic or mechanical systems, all movements being through clutches from a constantspeed electric motor, no resistances being incorporated.

Thos. W. Ward, Ltd., Albion Works. Sheffield, are selling Swedish-built Jimmy fork, reach and pallet trucks. The RSR reach truck has a capacity of 2,200 lb. and the mast has a movement of 2 ft. 51 in. Pedestrian-controlled GS fork trucks are made for 10-ewt. and 1-ton loads with standard lift heights of 8 ft. 4 in. and 10 ft.

It is one of the models in the German Ameise range of appliances. An attachment for lifting .crates of milk is of rectangular construction with two lateral bars Which can be. moved vertically by actuating a manual hydraulic pump. By this means, hooks on the bars engage with the crates so that they may be carried resting against, the frame.

The company have evolved a quick-acting clamp for lifting drums. Two claws engage with the lip of the drum, the lower part of which rests against a curved member. Priced at £27 10s.. the .device can be supplied for any fork truck.

A paper-roll clamp for use in conjunction with mobile cranes has been evolved by R. H. Corbett and Co., Ltd., Burgess Hill, Sussex, for unloading reels from ships' holds and placing the loads on road vehicles. The company have also produced the Hydriver unit, a powered wheel for attachment to a stacker to provide low-speed mobility. A fork-truck clamp for handling strapped loads of bricks is another new design.

A form of electric drive known. as Tractamatic is offered by Geest Industries, Ltd., White House Chambers, Spalding, Lines, for pedestrian-controlled trucks. On withdrawal of the power the drive automatically disengages allowing the operator to propel the truck by hand. The drive is reversible and two models are available, h.p, for loads of up to 10 cwt. and h.p, for loads up to 6 cwt.

Lansing Bagnall, Ltd., Basingstoke, Hants, have produced a reach truck with a capacity of 2 tons. The mast has a travel uf 2 ft. 8 in and the machine can stack pallets 4 ft. square in an aisle 7 ft. 6 in. wide, The lifting and lowering speeds of the concern's 2,000-, 2.500and 3,000db. pedestrian-controlled fork trucks have been doubled. A competitively priced machine is a 10-cwt, pedestrian-controlled fork truck of simple design which is offered with heights of lift of either 4 ft. 9 in. or 12 ft. 2 in.

A four-wheel-drive mobile shovel, incorporating a Comrner TS3 engine and mounted on 14,00-24 tyres, has been evolved by F. E. Weatherill, Ltd., Welwyn Garden City; Herts. Two new shovels of 2,800-lb. capacity have been introduced-by the concern. Incorporating a Fordson Major oil engine, both types are similar except that one has front-wheel and the other rearwheel drive. The scoop is carried in a low position and elevates to discharge at a height of 12 ft, in 8 sec. Both types have a turning circle of 32-ft. diameter. Optional extras include a torque converter and power-assisted steering, whilst a 58-b.h.p. engine may be specified as an alternative,
