FREIGHT COSTS on the ferries to Orkney and Shetland will be cut by up to 25% when a new operator takes over the routes.
Caledonian MacBrayne has been chosen as the preferred bidder:it will introduce the new tariffs when it takes over the contract from Northlink in early summer.
Livestock will be included for the first time with a new container system: there will also be a review of proposals for more berths on vessels that are operating between Aberdeen and the islands.
Scottish Transport Minister Tallish Scott says: "Although the tendering was a complex exercise, the new contract is linancially sound and delivers real improvements for anyone using the service.
"The new service, when it is introduced, will benefit the economies of Shetland and Orkney by reducing freight rates for island businesses."
