Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Farrow. BASED: Great Yarmouth. SPECIALITY: General haulage, UK and international. CONTACT 01493 441444.

• "One of the reasons we went for larger tanks is that as far as the UK is concerned there is no cheaper fuel to buy than the fuel in your own yard. There is no bunkering charge. so you are saving maybe o.7p a litre straight away," says MDF director Mark Farrow. "If you leave the yard with about i,000 litres in the tank, sometimes you can do a week's work on it. If you run abroad the savings increase dramatically."

His units would originally have been specified with tanks with capacities of about 400 litres. However, they are now fitted with L000-litre tanks supplied by SB Components of Wisbech. The tanks save money—and Farrow has the figures to prove it.

"The price in the yard at the moment is 62.3p a litre," he reports. "The price we pay in Germany, with a small percentage for the cost of reclaiming VAT, is 4op a litre. That's an overall saving of 22.3p a litre. Now if you come into the UK with 800 litres of fuel, the saving at 23p a litre amounts to £184. That's just on one fill-up."

MDF runs Volvo trucks (Mark was formerly employed by a Volvo dealer), and they have had no problems with tank replacements. The work is always carried out before delivery.

"It's nice to have the tanks fitted from the start." he says. "If you retrofit tanks the brackets have to be painted to match the chassis, and there's more downtime involved."
