• In a further round in the continuing saga of Tyneside Passenger Transport Authority's plans to provide free travel for pensioners and disabled people, Newcastle Corporation has refused to pay the full amount of the necessary £470,000 precept.
The PTA will discuss a letter from the corporation's solicitor on Monday. Counsel for the corporation has suggested that there would be no difficulty in meeting the actual cost of the free-fare scheme — 3.4p in the £ — but refuses to pay the full 4.2p in the £ that the PTA requested.
The PTA's position was boosted this week when Gateshead and South Shields Councils both agreed to pay the PTA's precept unless told otherwise by the Department of the Environment.
