THE 30th annual luncheon of the Commercial Motor Users Association was held on Wednesday last at the Savoy Hotel.

The toast of " The Association " was given by H.R.H. The Duke of York, who said that our large cities give evidence of the enormous importance of commercial motoring. The number of rides on public-service vehicles averaged 210 per year for every member of the population. The number of goods vehicles had increased 27 per cent., and averaged one for every 110 persons. These were striking illustrations of the services which commercial vehicles give to tradeand industry. He hoped that all concerned would find a common meeting ground in the Transport Advisory Council, which had already met. He mentioned that the Minister of Transport was launching a new campaign to alleviate the road-accident problem.

Mr. S. N. Home, M.Inst.T., the President, in his reply, expressed deep appreciation of the honour which His Royal Highness had accorded to the Association. He mentioned that in adclition to its annual contribution to the Safety First Association, the National Council had voted 100 guineas towards the new campaign. Referring to weak bridges, he said it was the policy of the Ministry to contribute 75 per cent, towards the cost of strengthening, 25 per cent. being paid from local rates. In many cases, it would be difficult to obtain this from the rates, and he urged that, in special cases, the Road Fund contribution should be raised to 100 per cent. He imid special tribute to the work of the general secretary, Mr. F. G. Bristow.

Mr. G. Monro, C.B.E., M.Inst.T., gave the toast of " His Majesty's Ministers," which was responded to by the Home Secretary, the Rt. Hon. Sir John Gilmour, Bart., D.S.O., M.P. The Hon. Oliver Stanley, Minister of Transport, gave the toast of " The Chairman" in a diplomatic speech full of interest and humour. He spoke in glowing terms of Mr. Home's work for the Association.
