Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Better targeting of checks on trucks carrying potentially deadly radioactive loads is being called for by Department of Transport advisers.

The Advisory Committee on the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials (ACSTRM) wants tighter monitoring by specially trained traffic examiners to make sure hauliers conform to laws and codes of practice governing the carrying of radioactive loads by road. The Government is currently reviewing these regulations.

ACSTRM also says the split between the voluntary code of practice and legally-binding regulations is confusing, and the legal obligations on hauliers should be clearly defined. The committee was set up in 1985 to provide independent advice to the Transport Secretary and the Health and Safety Commission on safe transport of civil radioactive material.
