Mobile Shops

ATOM-LE shops are being used for a 11/..Lwide variety of purposes, and a new type which will interest butchers in particular has been devised by Mr. Frank Taylor, "Heath Bank," Farnley Tyas, near Huddersfield, the design having been registered at the Patent Office.

It is known as the Rolyat mobile shop, and the first example, which has a Morris-Commercial 30-cwt. chassis as its basis, has recently been completed. George Barker and Co. (Leeds), Ltd., 203 and 205, Kirkstall Road, Leeds, has secured the sole right to produce the van body with the insulation chamber and shop equipment, but a purchaser is not confined to any particular type of chassis or refrigerating plant. The present outfit is all-British and, including a Lightfoot Ellareold plant, the price complete is £495.

The van body is 9 ft. 9-ins, long, 6 ft. wide and 6 ft. high. The ftont portion, immediately behind the driver's cab, forms •a cold chamber, having a capacity of 75 cubic ft. Its walls are insulated with compressed cork slabs, 4 ins. thick, whilst it 'is lined internally with stipple glazed asbestos-cement sheets, which combine an attractive appearmice with sound hygienic properties. This cold chamber is a replica of the type, used for the refrigerators to be found_ in the ordinary butcher's shop.

The double door of the cold chamber opens into the rear portion of the body, which is of good size and is equipped as a butcher's shop. There is a large display window at the rear and a sub • stantial base for setting. out joints. This section incornorates the usual butcher's requisites, such as a block, hooks and stainless-steel bars, Electric lighting is used for the interior.

The automatic refrigeration plant has been well tested and it has been, founcl that the temperature Of the cold room is maintained. The motor which drives the refrigeration plant can be connected by plugging into any electric light. fitting. The cooler inside the cold room is built on the Enteetie principle, and' enables the cold chamber to maintain its low temperature for an extended period. • We are informed that the running of the plant at night suffices to keep the temperature of the cold room at a low level for the whole of the next day, although the cold-room door may be opened very frequently.

It will be • appreciated that this unique combination of travelling refrigerator and shop is an advance on the present-day methods employed by some retailers, for it enables meat to be supplied to the customer in perfect condition and free from contamination by dust and flies. This type of shop should prove of special value to multiple suppliers, as well as to butchers serving suburban and country districts.
