truckers who are up in arms — more than a million Indian lorry drivers have refused to curry favour with state governments by rejecting a new freight tax.

So incensed are the Indian drivers that they have been on strike since 1 July and have threatened not to return until the tax is withdrawn. And they have the backing of Indian Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, who is due to meet the chief ministers of nine state governments to ask them to withdraw the hated tax —seven others have already complied.

The Indian Government has taken the unusual step of petitioning its own supreme court, telling it the tax is "unreasonable", and has backed the lorry drivers' union, which claims the tax is illegal. Would that our PM were as pro-truck.
