Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

This journal is exten, irely read by the heads of many wealthy commer.cial houses,

The S.M.M.T. ballots for spaces at next month's North of England Show (Manchester) will take place to-morrow, Friday.

Manufacturers are recommended to keep themselves in close touch with the General Manager of the South African Railways—page 427.

Our leading articlee this week deal with the following topical subjects: (1) " Where to buy benzol (2) " Cab-rank telephones ;" (3) " Horse-power rating of old machines ; " and (4) "The one-man petrol lorry."

Having regard to the published records of economies that can be effected by the nee of the Adams self-starter, we think that the particulars of a new mechanical selfstarter, which will be found on page 435, cannot fail to interest many readers of this journal.

Owing to the remarkable advance in the sale of parcelcars, for demands in which quarter the past few months have been prolific, there is a call for more capital in an established undertaking of which we have knowledge,.

For information, address " Parcelear," care of the Editor.

The W.O. Tests.

The first official trials by the War Office, of subsidy-type vehicles, for the year 1913, are now in progress. Our last few issues have dealt with points of principle that arise.

The War Office is itself of opinion that these vehicles are more suited for Colonial than home conditions of use, and it offers very inadequate subsidy terms to purchasers.

A few particulars and illustrations will be found on pages 442 and 443. Three machines are undergoing the, tests.

Vehicles Left at the Roadside.

The proprietor of any kind of commercial motor who sends out his vehicle in the charge of a single mart undoubtedly accepts risks which do not fall to the lot of the owner who sends two men. In cases• of emergency, for example, the second man can be dispatched for assistance.

A reeent typical case, and one which has prompted one of our " Opinions from others'' this week, concerns a ease which came before the Dundee Sheriff Court on the 10th inst.. when a mot or-lorry driver, named David Stewart, was charged with obstruction. The man, it appears, poured a can of water into his petrol tank, instead of petrol ; the can had been given to .him in the belief that it was filled with petrol. When he reached aplace called Tullybaccart. on the road between Coupar Angus and Dundee, he could proceed no further. It was getting late, and he remained in artenaance until about three o'clock in the morning, when he left the machine, after manceuvring it to the side of the road, and trimming and lighting all the lamps. He then tramped into Dundee to inform his employers.

The defence was that the driver took the only reasonable course, and that there was practically no obstruction of the road, but a fine of 10s. was imposed.

Accurate Ball Bearings.

"A.E.W." (Salford) should also note, with further reference to our reply on page 415 of last week, that he can get accurate ball bearings from the Hoffmann Manufacturing Co., Ltd., of Chelmsford.

Sydne'y also Orders Merryweathers.

We are now informed that Merryweather and Sons. Ltd., received an order for three ram-type motor fire-pumps from the Sydney authorities at the same time as the order for the nine turbine machines was placed with Dennis

Bros., Ltd. This is evidence of the intention of the Australian brigade to acquire further data.

White Trucks or Russia.

Our illustration is of the departure from the White U.S.A. works of a portion of the order for thr eeton trucks, with standard Russian . Army bratliea, to the order of the Russian Government ; 30 trucks of this make are on order altogether by that buyer. We understand that other orders, from Russian commercial sources, followed the affective demonstrations, for which Mr. Frederick Colman was responsible in Russia last year, and that in this dieection the sales include a number of 1?,-2-ton tank wagons.

"Cedes" Electric Vehicles.

The Cedes Electric Traction, Ltd., of 112, Great Portland Street, W., points out that it supplied the Port of London Authority with ambulances. We had unfortunately confused this service with that for the City of London Authority, whose machines were supplied by the Electromobile Co., Ltd. The Cedes Co. also desires it to be added that its patented motors and other electrical equipment, and the chassis for them, are constructed at Stamford Hill, where its works have been in operation for some months. Bradford's Bill, 1915.

We are officially notified by the Town Clerk of Bradford (see page 435), that the obnoxious clauses, to which we gave full publicity in our issue of the 2nd inst., have now been withdrawn. The likely immediate effect of these proposals will be the formation of a strong district C.M. V.A.
