• A resolution protesting against the expected take-over of Salford's transport undertaking with its £2.75m assets was defeated by the chairman's casting vote at the city's council meeting last week.
If the undertaking, which has 276 buses and an annual turn-over of E2m, is merged into the proposed Manchester PTA, there would not be a penny compensation, said Ald. R. Evans (Cons.). The Conservative members condemned the proposals as "backdoor" nationalization.
Salford would only be entitled to one member out of 25 on the board of the PTA, it was claimed.
Labour members said passengers were inconvenienced by the fragmented nature of present bus services. Aid. B. Moylan (Lab.) said that although Salford's undertaking had been first class in the past, they supported the Government's proposals since services in smaller towns, some making a profit and some a loss, could not meet future needs.
