tions in connection with the appointment of members of the Transport Advisory Council, to be established under the Road and Rail Traffic Act, 1933, the Minister of Transport has appointed the following to be members of the Council for a period of three years. The Minister does not propose at present to exercise his powers to appoint -two additional members:—

The chairman of the Council is the RT. HON. VISCOUNT GOSCHEN, P.C., G.C.I.E., C.B.E., who was Joint Parliamentary Secretary of the Board of Agriculture in 1918, Governor of Madras in 1924-1929, and Viceroy and Acting -Governor-General in India from June-November, 1929.

The representatives of the interests of users of mechanically propelled vehicles are as follow :— SIR. JAMES ADAM, K.C., C.B.E., who is vice-president of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club.

Ma. SIDNEY E. GARCRE, M.I.Mech.E., M.Inst.T., who is vice-president of the Institute of Transport, vice-chairman of the Omnibus Owners Association, chairman of Tilling and British Automobile Traction, Ltd., Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., and other important transport companies.

Ms. WILLIAM EDWARDS , M.Inst.T., president of the National Road Transport Employers Federation.

MR. 3. S. NICHOLL, M.Inst.T., who is senior vice-chairman of the Road Haulage Association, a director of McNamara and Co, (1921), Ltd., and of Allied Transport, Ltd., Birmingham.

Mn. S. N. HORNE M.Inst.T., president of the Commercial Motor Users Association, vice-president of the National " Safety First " Association, vice-president of the International Federation of Commercial Motor Transport Organizations, and a direc tor of Charrington, Gardner, Locket and Co.

Those representing the interests of local authorities in England and Wales consist of SIR FREDERICK BERRYMAN, DL., J.P., ALDERMAN SIR PERC/VAL BOWER, M. B.E „ J .P . LT.-COL. SIR SEYMOUR WILLIAMS. K.B.E., and COUNCILLOR BASIL MARSDEN-SMEDLEY.

Sir Frederick Berryman is chairman of the highways committee of the County Councils Association. Lt.-Col. Sir Seymour Williams is a member of various Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Health Advisory Councils, as well as chairman of the executive committee of the Rural District Councils Association. Councilor Marsden-Smedley is a member of the London County Council and of Chelsea Borough Council, chairman of the works sub-committee of the Metropolitan Boroughs Standing Joint Committee, and a member of the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee.

Representatives of the interests of local authorities in Scotland are MAJOR SIR ROBERT BROOKE, BT., D. S O. , M.C., D.L., who is convener of the Ross-shire County Council, and BAILIE ALEXANDER 1VICLEAN,'who 15 convener of the transport committee of Glasgow Corporation.

Users of horses and horse-drawn vehicles are represented by Ma. C. G. ARGLES, J.P., past president of the National Horse Association of Great Britain. The interests of pedestrians are represented by SIR ALEXANDER KAYE BUTTERWORTH, LL.B., chairman of committee and vice-president of the Pedestrians Association.

Cyclists are represented by MR. W. P. COOK; vicepresident of the C.T.C.

The interests of railways are represented by the chiefs of three important companies. They are SIR JOSIAH C. STAMP. G.B-E., D.Sc., LL.D., F.B.A., SIR JAMES MILNE, C.S.I., and SIR HERBERT WALKER, K.C.B.

MR. WILFRED H. CURTIS is representing the interests of canals, and MR. L. A. P. WARNER, C.B.E., those of harbours and docks—in both cases property not owned or controlled by railway companies—whilst SIR ALFRED READ, J,P., and CAPT. J. FISHER represent coastwise shipping.

The interests of labour will be served by MR. ERNEST BEvnv, general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union ; MR. JOHN MARCHBANK, secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen, and MR. W. R. SPENCE, general secretary of the National Union of Seamen.

So far as trading interests, including

agriculture, are concerned, SIR A. STEVEN BILSLANDt Bt., MC., j.P., Ma. E. J. Fox, MR. W.. H. GAUNT, C.B.E., M.Inst.,T., MR. J. W. SUTTON and Ma. • ROWLAND R. ROBBINS, C.B.E., j.P., are the representatives. Mr. W. H. Gaunt will be well known to our readers as transport manager of J. Lyons and Co., Ltd., whilst he is also president of the Mansion House Association on Transport. Mr. J. VV. Sutton is chairman of the transport committee and a director of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd., and a member of the Post Office Advisory Council.

The secretary of the Council is MR. R. H. TOLERTON, D.S.O., M.C.

The purpose for which this Council has been formed is to give advice and assistance to the Minister of, Transport' in conneetion with the .-discharge by him of his function in relation to means and facilities for transport and their co-ordination, improvement and development. The duties of the Council do not include giving advice on any matter which is specifically directed to be referred to the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee.
