Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A SERIES of one-day strikes by Scottish draymen has been called off following a revised pay offer. The action would have disnipte d deliveries to 2,700 pubs in the run-up to Christmas (CM 2 December).

Nearly 100 Scottish Courage drivers agreed to a 7.3% increase by a majority of three to one after the conciliation service ACAS intervened:The Transport & General Workers Union lost its battle to prevent separate pay scales for new drivers which would have left them up to £3,500 worse off under the company's original offer.

Pat Rafferty,T&Gregionalindustrial organiser, says: 'As part of the agreement there was give and take so the new drivers will be paid a different rate, but that will be one rate and not two as originally proposed. As far as we are concerned, we have negotiated an improvement which has removed the threat of strikes before Christmas."

The T&G says the deal takes drivers' pay from £21,116 to £23,173 this year; rises will be linked to inflation in 2005 and 2006. New drivers will be recruited on the old rate which will also increase in line with inflation.
