DRIVING TO SUCCESS

Deborah Campbell, the woman in black, is looking pleased and with good reason. Deborah, who works for City Support Services in Northampton (a division of City Logistics), has recently been awarded a Clicence. She is pictured here with Colin Conroy, general manager of City Support Services, and Lin Marlow of Training Northampton, a division of Northampton College.

Campbell first came to work for the company on a four-week work experience scheme, the Work Based Learning for Adults programme. The WBLA is funded by Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce Training and Enterprise. Its aim is to encourage people over the age of 25, who have been unemployed for six months or more, back into the workforce.

City Support Services was so impressed by Campbell that after her trial period they recommended she should apply for her C-licence. She did this through Training Northampton, which provides various government-funded programmes, offering training and employment opportunities for unemployed adults in the area.

Now qualified to drive vehicles up to 26 tonnes, Campbell has joined the company's pool of more than 50 full-time drivers. This is a woman who is going places and the company hopes that she will soon apply for her C+E Licence. "We have many problems recruiting good-quality class one and two drivers," says Colin Conroy, "but by funding a scheme such as ours to train drivers further, we are guaranteeing driver development, driver continuity and loyalty."
