Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

driving, it is interesting to learn that in the Argentine the more orthodox type is preferred, because the driver is then less liable to be injured in the event of a smash. The fact is that many of the drivers over there will consent to use only the orthodox type. The idea that it is part of their duty so to drive as to avoid risk of accident does not, we understand, enter into their calculations at all. One British maker, wishing to show a bus at the forthcoming exhibition at Buenos Aires, has had to alter his forward-type chassis accordingly.

ONE of the problems with petrol containing much cracked spirit is that chemical reaction sets in, even when the fuel is kept enclosed, and the result Is that a thick brown deposit is sometimes formed. This causes a certain amount of difficulty in supply, as stocks cannot be maintained at a high level during off seasons.

El8 ONE is inclined to wonder how the 67 aliens who are licensed to drive taxicabs on the streets of London obtained their licences. We have known many London-born applicants fail in the "knowledge of London" test, but possibly the old saying that "the Londoner knows least about his city" is really true in these cases, strange although it may seem.

A STRIKING statement was made by the chair man of the Newcastle Corporation transport committee at a recent demonstration of the Daimler bus equipped with the Fluid Flywheel and selfchanging gear. This was to the effect that the new vehicle would relieve tramway authorities from the difficulty hitherto experienced in changing drivers from trams to buses. He also asserted that it is not sufficiently true me'rely to say that trams are finished, but that tramlines have been laid where they would never have been put down had the authorities foreseen the development S which have occurred. CANADA is going the right way to work in meet ing the challenge of the aeroplane and the motorcar in the field of transport. Instead of endeavouring to hamper road vehicles, the railway trains are being made more comfortable and arranged to work at higher speeds. Shower baths, cinematograph pictures, wireless and gymnasiums are now being provided on some trains.

AN interesting fact concerning the employment of the motor vehicle in -U.S.A. is that 5,677,500 or 21.4 per cent, of the total of 26,500,000 in use are owned by farmers. Dividing the total into private and commercial types, it has been found that the respective numbers on the farms are 4,910,300, or 21.2 per cent. of the total of private cars, and 767,200, or 22.8 per cent. of business vehicles. MANY people may have wondered why so many cheap American vehicles have cast-iron crankcases. This is for the reason that they then have no difficulties with expansion. The lighter alloys are more culpable in this respect, and consequently require greater attention to details.

A. CURIOUS feature of the oil engine is that it is capable of running in the reverse direction, and this has actually occurred in one or two instances when an engine has been slowed down unduly. It happened recently with an oil-electric vehicle, and the driver could not understand why the vehicle would not accelerate after descending a hill until it was found that, although the engine was running quite fast, it was rotating in the anti-clockwise direction.
