The Third Axle and an Auxiliary Gearbox Make 20-seater Bodywork Possible AN accompanying photograph illustrates a Ford three-axled 20-seater all-weather coach, which has recently been delivered to Messrs. Macintyre and Sons, of Fort William.
The extension unit employed was the well-known Twin-Six set, marketed by the 'Truck and Tractor Appliance Co. (Manchester), Ltd., of Ashburton Road, _Trafford Park, Manchester. There are brakes on all six wheels.
In addition to the extra axle, a special auxiliary gearbox wps fitted, so that the laden vehicle would be able to tackle the very hilly roads on which it is destined for service. The gearbox employed was the Super' Warford unit, marketed in this country by the Truck and Tractor concern.
It is not, of course, intended that these gears should be used in sequence, but it will be seen that the vehicle can be readily adapted for all sorts of work.
The ratios provided in direct auxiliary drive are 5.14, 8.69, 15.88 and 32.9; those in over drive are 2.85, 6.51, 11.9 and 24.67 to 1, whilst those in -under drive are 8.22, 13.89, 25.4 and 52.64 .T. H. Jennings and Son, Ltd., of Crewe Road, Sandbach, has made a sound job of the all-weather bodywork,
which incorporates the Triumf-ed sliding head, three entrance doors, moquette-covered upholstery, electric light
ing, chromium-plated fittings, etc. This company is also noted for its tipping gear and goods-vehicle bodies.
