A BIG BRITISH BUS FLEET FOR CAIRO

A Creditable British Effort. 108 Thornyerofts Ordered to Inaugurate a New Motorbus System AMAN who appears to be _filled with a keen desire to see British commercial motors in more extensive use throughout the world is Comdr. F. T. Hare, chairman and managing director of the Overseas Motor Transport Co., Ltd., 10, Victoria Street, London, S. W.1.

After successfully pioneering the formation of a passenger service with British buses in Malta, this gentleman has set himself to obtain other concessions for the operation of buses in various places abroad, and has now acquired an important concession in Cairo, for which a new company, the Egyptian General Omnibus Co., S.A., is at present being formed. Already 108 Thornycroft LC-type, normal-control, left-hand drive, four-cylinder, 27-seater buses have been ordered, and bodies for them, of standard design, are being constructed

The single-deck body is in two compartments, the forward compartment (for first-class passengers) accommodating 12 persons in transverse seats, and the aft compartment (for second-class passengers) seating 15 persons, of whom 8 are located on longitudinal seats. The gangway headroom is 6 ft. 63, ins., and the floor height is 2 ft. 6 ins. The first-class seats arc leather covered, the second-class seats being finished in rattan.

All the windows have Q.T. winders of the continuous-wind type with detachable handles. Louvred aluminium eaves

extend about 8 ins, down from the cantrail on the outside of the window pillars. Further protection against glare is provided by sliding sun screens of thin Agasote millboard.

The construction of the body is interesting. Except for the deeply arched roof sticks, which are of ditched ash, all the frame members are of teak, the floor bearers being ai ins. deep. The outer panelling below the waistrail is of Sundeala, except where the panelling is curved, beaten aluminium being used here. The internal panelling is of aluminium. A double roof is formed by Agasote panelling inside and outside the roof sticks, an air draught circulating between the two panels. Plettner roof , ventilators are fitted. The exterior is finished below the waistrail in the national Egyptian green, the upper panelling being white and the waistrail black.
