Used vans sales thrive as longer
lead times from manufacturers take effect — even though most van makers have boosted
production, according to George Alexander of Glass's Guide.
arge panel vans have enjoyed strong market sentiment for the past 18 months," reports George Alexander,chief commercial vehicle editor at Glass's Guide. "Despite manufacturing capacity having been ramped up, supply difficulties for new 3.5-tonners remain severe."
LWB high-spec 3.5-tonners that do appear on the used market are being snapped up, as are MWB, high-roof vans.Alexander adds: "All well-presented large panel vans are proving to be in demand with the power rating taking — temporarily a back scat. Only LDV's Maxus appears to be failing to make hay while the sun shines. Currently, the first significant numbers appearing at auction are finding the going hard, which is probably a case of the used marketplace having to establish its relationship with this new LDV product." Older examples of M-13 Sprinter 310 and 312 LWBs., with greater mileage on the clocks, find homes only if they are in the right condition.
"The best examples of lateyear Transit 350s, preferably with the higher 115hp engine, easily attract indicated guide trade bids. By comparison where supply is high and condition is poor, older 75hp and 90hp examples will struggle,"Alexander says.
Extended lead times have boosted demand for used medium-sized vans Alexander says:"This sector looks set to ride out the slow summer period unscathed.Although preference is now given to high-power models, if there isn't the choice then a lower rating will do."
Demand is generally high for good examples of the Ford Transit 260/280TDCi, M-B Vito and Vauxhall/Renault/Nissan Vivaro/Trafic/Primastarstyle vans, while Volkswagen T5 Transporters are readily available as a lot of late-year low-mileage examples are being disposed of by fleet operators. •
