Thompsons of Prudhoe

Location: Prudhoe, Northumberland Sector: Demolition, earthworks, recycling, skip hire Size of fleet 135 Vehicle: Volvo 1L240 Emission standard: Euro-4 GVW: 18 tonnes Bodywork: Edbro loading gear

Next year demolition, recycling and earthworks contractor Thompsons of Prudhoe will be celebrating 60 years in business. John Thompson, the son of founders William and Margaret, is the current chairman and his son John and daughter Helen serve on the board. Based in Northumberland the company employs 330 staff and has a 135-strong fleet as well as extensive plant equipment, which works on contracts worth from E5m to £500m.

Thompsons runs four quarries, four waste disposal sites and three recycling sites across Northumberland, Durham, Cumbria and Tyne and Wear. Volvo Trucks figure heavily on the fleet and the company has added four Euro-4 FL 240 skip loaders acquired from Volvo Truck and Bus North.

CM's eye landed on NJO7 NXY, which comes with an eight-speed transmission. It has an Edbro-fitted skip loader and the fleet is run by transport manager Ronnie McGrouther. Three sub-division businesses add to the fleet; Barney Rubble skip hire has 12 vehicles, Corbetts Skip Hire 16, and Concrete Tyne and Wear mini mix has four.
