Smiths of Denny

Location: Grangemouth Sector: Bulk, long-distance, distribution Size of fleet: 20 Vehicle: MAN TGA Emission standard: Euro-4 GCW: 40 tonnes Bodywork: ilia Russell Smith is the third generation of his family to run Smiths of Denny, based at Grangemouth, Stirlingshire.

Russell is managing director and his brother Andrew is a fellow director.

Today, Smiths of Denny employs 33 people and runs a 20-strong MAN fleet working on bulk delivery, distance and distribution. There are 16 tractors, two 14t rigicis and two 7.5t trucks.

Smith ran ERF products before switching to MAN in 1999 with the F2000 and he hasn't looked back. The truck under the microscope will be running for a third party, Gefco, and is decked out in its colours operating out of Bellshill, Glasgow. There are a further two trucks running from Gefco's Manchester office. Russell Smith It will run locally during the day with a single-axle 30ft trailer with a tail-lift making multi-drop deliveries, before switching to a 40ft trailer for trunking to Coventry," says Smith. "For the night run it will be doublemanned, with one guy driving it during the day."

That means it's a high-mileage vehicle on two specific operations; multi-drop and long distance. Smith expects to run up 300,000km a year with the 4x2 TGA440 before taking it off the operation after 30 months. It has the XLX cab and automated transmission, a common theme within the fleet.

like MAN, it is well engineered, The F2000 did well, plus at Bellshill there is a dealership there, which is important," he says. "I am definitely an EGR man. I want it engineered [into the truck]. I think it is the way forward, I don't subscribe to the SCR argument."

While the dealership's location close to Gefco is important for any incidents downing the truck, Smith looks after his own fleet with his workshop on site at Grangemouth.
