Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I was pleased to read in CM July 12 of your interest in the paper on the Heathrow Personalized Bus Service which I presented at the PTRC Summer Meeting at Warwick.

I hope therefore that it does not appear as an ungrateful cavil if I point out something which would have been obvious to your reporter had he actually attended the presentation in person, namely the fact that I am Ms and not Mr M. J. Heraty.

One's battle for acceptance in the predominantly male world of transport planning is not helped by the assumption that any name, un accompanied by a title implying gender, automatically refers to a male person You are not alone in making this error, but I feel I should draw it to your attention.

Ms M. HERATY, (Senior Planner (Public Transport)) Freeman Fox & Associates), London [We apologize to this correspondent who is our first Ms, but I can assure her that this conference was not covered by remote control; we did have a journalist in attendance. — Ed.]
