Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T is always interesting to follow the coucse of design in other countries, d particularly in the United States America, which is the greatest user producer in the world.

One of the best known of American les is the Federal, and the company astructing this has just brought out roe new six-eylindered models, two of :in being a 1-tanner and a 2-tanner th bevel drive and the third a 2-tonner th worm drive. Theprices are not

available' but it is claimed that 3se will be lower than any previously arged by the company.

One of the points in design is an :erchangeability of engines, for, if iired, a Waukesha four-cylindered it can be employed in lieu of the ntinental six-cylindered model. • An improvement has been made in suspension, which is now on the 'ee-point principle instead of the fourint, and each support is cushioned in bber.

The 1-ton model is known as the put. It has a wheelbase of 10 ft.

4 ins, and gives a loading space of 8 ft. 5 ins; from, the driver's seat. An 11-ft. 4-in, wheelbase model can be supplied at an extra cost.

The chassis itself follows closely the design of the previous four-cylindered model, including a Borg and Beck single-plate dry clutch, three-speed Federal gearbox, Cleveland Universal: joints and a Timken axle.. The rest'wheel drums have side-by-side brakes of the internal-expanding type andare 16. ins, in diameter. The s'teering gear is a Gernmer .and the electrieal 'equip= inent of Delco-Remy make. The tyre equipment is' 30-in. by 5-in. pnentriatics.

As regards the engine, this has 'four main bearings and a 2k-in. crankshaft. The bore and stroke are 2* ins. and 4i ins, respectively, and the, engine develops 44.5 b.h.p. at 2,800 r.p.m. The cylinders are of the 1J-headed type. This is a high-speed model, said•to be cap.ble of 50 m.p.h.

In the 2-ton chassisthe standard wheelbase is 1]. ft. 11 ins., and the. loading space 9 ft. 11 ins. from the

back of the cab. Longer wheelbase, of 12 ft. 11 ins., 14 ft. and 15 ft. are Las& available.

The six-cylindered unit is also headed and has a bore and stroke of 31 ins. and. 41 ins., _developing 62 b.h.p. at 2,700 r.p.m. A special feature of this "engine is a 2Fin, crankshaft with 'seven bearings.. In . the 'smaller .model the gearbox' forms a unit' with the engine, but, in this case, the 'gearbox is Mounted. amidships. It has ea Federal four-speed "unit, three-point mounted in the frame.

In the worm-driven model a trans-mission brake is carried immediately in front of the axle, this having a drum diameter of 13 ins. and a width of 3-i ins. The brakes for ordinary use operate in wheel drums 17i ins, in diameter. In the ease of the bevel-gear axle the shoes are mounted side by side in the rear-wheel drums.

Unlike previous models, no governor is provided. This is in recognition of the higher road speeds at which such vehicles now run.
