Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WEEK • CM guarantees free publicity for any operator unfortunate enough to become a victim of truck crime. It may not get your truck, trailer or components back, but at least it could make life harder for the thieves attempting to use or sell your property.

• Owner-driver Brian Jeal is furious with thieves who have threatened his livelihood after breaking through security devices and stealing his Scania.

Jeal, trading as B&B Transport in Colchester, states: "These villains must be stopped to avoid further hardship and heartbreak to struggling hauliers. I know, I have become a victim at the age of 55.

"It has taken me, like all other victims, years of hard work to obtain a trouble-free, brand new vehicle and to be able to enjoy some comfort and pride in my achievements ... and now it is inevitable that after deducting what is owed to the finance company, I will not be able to afford another vehicle," says jeal.

The theft has come at a particularly hard time. jeal's wife has just returned to work after a major operation and radio-therapy treatment for cancer. "It's been a very stressful time for us", he says.

The vehicle, a Scania R113M 360, registration number H574 GDX, has a distinctive blue and white livery with "Duchess" signwritten on the side of the wind deflector and B&B Transport on the front.

It was stolen at the beginning of the month from B Peck Commercials Blue Bar Garage on the Ipswich Road, Colchester. Thieves broke into a locked compound, disarmed the alarm system and shut off the security lights.

Mr Thieves have stolen one of the two vehicles run by DJ & LM Judd, costing the company at least the £24,000 needed for a replacement.

The Volvo FL7 8x4 tipper was stolen overnight on land close to the A447 Ashby Road, near Stapleton, Leicestershire. The vehicle, registration 0233 NJV, is lime green with a dark green roof and chassis. It has 'David J Judd' on the front.

Judd is unimpressed by the police. He says: "I haven't had a visit from police and I'm rather disgusted by that — it's half my livelihood."

• Employees of haulage contractor Dunn's (Shildon) were searching Teeside ports last week for their Mercedes which had been stolen from a Geest depot in County Durham.

The company values the loss of the 1617 9x2 rigid at £27,000 and director Robert Dunn says the company is also looking locally for the vehicle.

The vehicle, registration number G819 DPY, was stolen on the night of 9/10 April from Geest's Shildon depot, which has fencing, but no locked gate. The thieves smashed the driver's quarter window. The chassis number is 61701325465631 and engine number 366952 20 957 957. The cab and box are white, and the company name, plus 'Distribution Division' are written in light blue. The vehicle has a tail-lift.

• Kent-based Francis Contractors has been dealt a double blow with the loss of two vehicles — a third of its fleet — at the cost of over £60,000 to the company.

The vehicles were protected by a night security man and fence at Wouldham Industrial Estate, near Rochester, Kent. The thieves waited for the security man to clock-off at 03:00hrs before taking the tippers.

The police believe the vehicles have either been cut up for spares or gone abroad to Turkey and Cyprus for earthquake relief work.

The MAN 30-331, registration D85 RGN, is worth £25,000. The company had just spent around £12,000 on maintenance, including a new gearbox and rebuilding the engine.

The second vehicle, another MAN 30-331, registration F141 GGF, is worth around £35,000.

It had just passed its annual test and had just received a new set of rear tyres worth around £1,000.

"To say I'm extremely upset is an understatement," says director Darren Francis. Both vehicles are white, with black sunvisors.
