IT IS NOW certain that the Government has approved the deal that would give the French Peugeot/Citroen combine control of Chrysler UK.
As CM went to press it was expected that Industry Secretary Eric Varley would announce the decision of his department although it is thought that he might insist on the combine meeting the Chrysler unions. Most of the details of the merger seem to have been ironed out during a visit to London by the Peugeot president Jean-Paul Parayre last week.
The only snag seemed to be insistence by the British unions for guarantees on the future of the UK plants — and there has so far been no word on this.
