I read with interest the comments of Seddon Atkinson and Foden about the supposed Japanese invasion through Harris Assemblers of Dublin. I don't know why both companies should be so terrified of this new importer.

If the Japanese managed to sell 6,000 trucks, not all of these sales would be taken from Seddon or Foden, but from all manufacturers, including the present importers.

Also, as Harris is talking about employing local labour, perhaps they are not such a bitter pill to swallow. One wonders if it is the thought of competition that is at the back of the argument. Foden also is not really selling vehicles in every sphere and one must wonder why. They are not in the 16-ton field at all, and must have lost lots of business in the six-wheeler market to Volvo. So instead of looking and sounding apprehensive, both companies should be putting their vehicles where their mouths are, and let us, the customer, decide what we will buy.
