A SIGNIFICANT new model from Daimler-Benz has been designed specially for the British six-wheel tipper market. Designated the LPK 2419 the new model is here primarily due to the efforts of Mercedes-Benz (Great Britain) Ltd., managing director, Peter Yates. Mr Yates, who was managing director of Atkinson Vehicles before joining Mercedes, has a very close understanding of the six-wheel tipper market-and has been able to get the new model built almost exactly to his requirements.

The Mercedes-Benz LK 2624 6 x 4 tipper which is also to be announced at the show (CM Aug 18) is primarily a heavy duty off-road vehicle but the LPK 2419 is a 24-ton-gvw double-drive six-wheeler which meets

the C and U requirements for maximum-weight three-axle tippers. The LPK 2419 uses the short version of the forward-control cab (no sleeper compartment) and a minimum-weight chassis, rather than the normalcontrol cab and heavy-duty chassis of the LK 2624 6 x 4.

The engine is the Mercedes-Benz 0M360 which has an 8.72-litre capacity and develops 180 bhp at 2500 rpm and 412 lb ft at 1500 rpm (both at BS AU 141a : 1971 net conditions).

A 13.8in, single-dry-plate clutch is used in conjunction with a 2F 6-speed all-synchromesh gearbox, the ZF S6-70/3. Drive from the gearbox is by separate propshafts to each axle, via a transfer box. No inter-axle differential lock is fitted to the transfer box as one is not needed with this type of layout. Differential locks are available across each axle as an option. The bogie has a plated weight of 18 tons and has a standard reduction ratio of 6.857 to 1.

The front axle is plated at 6 tons and is fitted with Mercedes-Benz power steering type LS5.

The full model number Lpic 2419/36 indicates the wheelbase, ie 3.6 metres or 14ft O4in. Bogie spread is 4ft 3in. Kerb weight of the chassis-cab is 6.1 tons.

The frame side-members, which are a completely new design, are 9.4in. x 2.5 in. channel section and are flitched to include to bogie area.
