Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SEVEN VIETNAMESE illegal immi(-Tants have been found concealed in a truck-load of wine by UK Border Agency (UKBA) officers at Calais.

The seven, who were inside the softsided trailer of a Lithuanian-registered vehicle had wrapped themselves in green bin-liners in an effort to avoid detection.

They were caught after officers checked e

the vehicle with a CO2 detector. 7, The driver was allowed to continue on 6 the route to Gloucester, although both he and the haulier could subsequently face a

fine of up to £2,000 per stowaway.

Tom Dowdall, UKBA director of European operations says: "By hiding inside lorries and similar vehicles, illegal immigrants are putting their lives at risk.

"Since January, we have searched more than 400,000 freight vehicles, checking they are not harbouring illegal human cargo."

A UKBA spokesman adds that its officers have become used to arresting the same individuals time and again.

He says: "These people have no paperwork, but our officers often recognise the same would-he immigrants three or four times in a row.

"This is one of the reasons we think we are being successful in stopping them coming to the UK in the first place."
