Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ran someone tell me what

the exact legal situation is covering HGV speed limiters, in particular the recent drop to 85km/h?

The reason I ask is that I know of two large chemical companies in this area that have been obliged to spend thousands of pounds to reduce the speed limiters on LGVs normally carrying hazardous products down to 85kmili with effect from 1 September 1998.

Despite this you still see similar national fleet vehicles, particularly tankers, rushing around in excess of not only this limit, but the existing 90km/h—all carry

ing hazardous goods.

If my point is correct perhaps a comment in your excellent magazine would benefit in two ways: • Draw attention to this change for drivers and transport managers who are not aware of it; • Hopefully gain a little more space from other road users, including other HGV drivers, when they encounter vehicles carrying hazardous products, particularly on motorways at the reduced maximum speed.

Driving at this new limit requires even more changes to styles of driving and I can only foresee a very serious multiple pile-up before long due to this reduction.

Keep up the good work in the magazine.
