Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The duration of the licence held by Newport based Si Haulage

1) & Storage has been curtailed to expire at the end of the year and the company has agreed to put all its vehicles through fresh MoT tests.

The company was set up by the son and daughter of Ronton Haulage's Anthony Lewis. In March South Wales LA John Mervyn Pugh directed that its licence should expire at the end of June 1993. He was satisfied that they were not a "front" for their father but was concerned about their maintenance record and a series of convictions.

SJ Haulage appeared before the LA again following convictions in June for overloading and using a vehicle without tax.

Stephen Lewis said the vehicle had been used in an emergency. He assured the LA that it was now taxed.

For the company, Colin Ward said DOT vehicle examiners were full of praise over maintenance standards. Stephen Lewis was now without the influence of Anthony Lewis: He belonged to the dinosaur generation," said Ward.

Mervyn Pugh said they were slowly turning Stephen Lewis into a good operator, but they were not quite there yet. He directed that the renewal of the licence be considered at a further public inquiry.
