• The Princess Marina, a former Wick lifeboat, reached its last resting place, the National Lifeboat Museum in Basildon, last week — but by road rather than sea, even though Basildon is within 51cm of the Thames estuary.
Heavy haulier Engineering Services of Stanford le Hope took five days to move the 30tonne vessel from Buckle, near Inverness, to Essex. The journey by sea would have cost too much in fuel, the company explains.
