• The Vehicle Inspectorate has announced plans to audit the recall systems of truck, bus and trailer builders.
However car makers will be affected first and it will be several years before the commercial vehicle industry can be audited, says Gerry Hamill, head of the VI's recall section.
The scheme is designed for the Vito take an active part in recalls, instead of simply accepting standards of manufacturers and distributors without question. The scheme will be funded by the DTp. Hamill adds: "Heavy truck recalls are more successful than those for light trucks. Heavy truck operators are more professional and only too happy to respond to a recall."
