Tippers Haulage Ltd (Cardiff Waste)

• The 10-vehicle licence of Tippers Haulage Ltd, trading as Cardiff Waste, has been renewed for a two-year period, by South Wales LA Ronald Jackson, in the light of environmental objections, with the aim of spurring the local authority to take some action.

A large number of representations came from local residents that the company's scale of operations from premises in Glamorgan Street were a major problem in half a dozen surrounding streets, and they expressed fears for the safety of 500 children at a nearby primary school, Ernest Edmunds, a director, said the company had been operating from the site for 17 years, but would prefer to have a base where it would create no nuisance. One suggested alternative site had already been turned down by the city council.

In reply to the LA, Edmunds said the drivers had been told not to pass the primary school when they returned in the afternoon. The company had as yet had no approach from the city council. It would welcome any such approach as it could then think about expanding again.

The LA imposed conditions that vehicles must not normally leave base before 0730 or return after 1630 hours Mondays to Fridays, not leave before 0730 and return after 1230 hours on Saturdays; no Sunday operation or maintenance; and that the vehicles must be parked at all times within the operating venture and note in the surrounding streets.
